Confessions of a Seam Ripper Novice

A seam ripper might be one of the simplest tools in your sewing kit so you might assume there’s not much to learn about it.

If you are using a seam ripper for the first time, you would probably think you know exactly what to do: If you’re like me, the first time you picked one up, you may have thought, “Easy—I just slip the sharp tip under the stitches and cut!”

That’s exactly how I used it when I first started sewing… until I learned the true purpose of that little rounded prong (the red ball) on the opposite end.

Yes, that tiny bulb which sits opposite the blade isn’t just there for show. Initially, I thought I was alone, but I soon found out most beginners and even some pros miss this handy detail.

Purpose of the Red Ball

Like many sewers, I initially assumed the sole purpose of a seam ripper was to slice through stitches, with no particular technique beyond “don’t prick yourself.”

However, the red ball on your seam ripper actually plays a major role. Its function is to glide along the fabric while preventing accidental tears, so you can remove stitches without damaging the material.

The pointed, longer prong slices through the stitches, while the shorter, rounded end protects your fabric by providing a buffer.

Let me break down how the two prongs work together, with tips on how to get the cleanest, safest results. But first, let's know the parts of a basic seam ripper.

1 - Hold the seam ripper correctly

Grip the seam ripper by the handle as you would a pencil for control. This helps you guide the tool smoothly without applying too much pressure.

2 - Insert the red ball under the stitch

Separate the two pieces of fabric so that you can see the stitches between them. Now carefully slide the red ball beneath the stitch so that it is in the good part of the fabric while the pointed part is in the seam allowance.

3 - Guide the red ball along the fabric

Push the seam ripper so the J-curve cuts the stitches. As you move along the seam, let the red ball stay in contact with the fabric.

This way, the stitches are cut without the blade touching the fabric itself. This will minimize the risk of tearing the fabric.

Note that inserting the pointed prong instead under the stitch will still work, however, you need to be extra careful with this method as it is very easy to cut the fabric.

4 -  Cut every few stitches

For best results, cut every three to four stitches rather than running the seam ripper through the entire seam. This reduces the risk of tearing and keeps the fabric intact.

5 - Gently pull loose threads

After you’ve cut several stitches, you can pull the loosened threads gently from the fabric. If they stick, avoid tugging, which could stretch the fabric. Instead, use the seam ripper to free any remaining stitches. To achieve a cleaner look, you could use a lint roller to pick loose threads from the fabric.

By letting the red ball guide your movements, you can safely remove seams while protecting your material from unnecessary damage.

Knowing This Makes a Difference in My Sewing

Seam rippers are essential for fixing mistakes, but  I sometimes created new problems since I did not use them correctly — either my fabrics tore or my seams frayed.

After I learned this method of using a seam ripper, I noticed my fabrics stayed smoother, and I could remove seams easily and faster with a lot more confidence.

Plus, understanding the purpose of the red ball gave me a new appreciation for how this small but effective tool was designed. Now, every time I grab my seam ripper, I’m grateful for that little bulb!

Embrace the Function of Your Seam Ripper

If, like me, you’ve been missing out on the true function of your seam ripper, don’t be hard on yourself. Just embrace the red ball with care and patience and you will achieve clean ripping results.

With practice, using both parts of the seam ripper will become second nature, and you’ll wonder how you ever did without it. Happy ripping!
